PatcherGUI is also what you can use to change the colour of the health bars (I like to reverse the white/blue, so blue=HP and white=armor).Īlso there are some cool graphics tweak mods (Re-colouring project, Military re-texture pack) which use Texmod. someone got a lot of grenade kills - obviously destined to be a Grenadier :) ).

Commander’s Choice is a great mod - you can actually be a commander and choose your rookies Specialist path (I usually choose based on the “feel” of how the rookie performed up to promotion, e.g. There are also a few camera tweaks and other odds and ends you can add with a Nexus mod by one of the people who works on LW, called UKPUtils (the PatcherGUI prog there). One of the great things about the LW mod is that it is itself highly moddable and there’s a section of the Nexus forum for the LW mod that’s devoted to modding the mod (you can easily tweak things like length of repair time for interceptors, or injury time, if you feel they’re a bit OTT). With the other two realism tweaks (the critical angles one and the other similar one) I feel they depart a bit too much from the boardgame core. Red Fog is quite nice if you’re a confident player and don’t get your own guys injured very often (but only with the addition of the mod on Nexus that turns the “decay” from linear to Gaussian) but if you get your guys injured a lot, the added tinge of realism is more useful to the aliens than to you.

If the grain was finer with things like HP and Defence (scale of 100 maybe) and if accuracy weren’t so hugely important, then yeah, the variety would be fun and the added layer of micro-management would be rewarding, but as it is, it’s a lot of faff and extra pondering time at the cost of gimpishness and a substantial number of actually useless rookies.Ĭinematic Mode is LW’s “easy mode” - makes your guys like movie heroes with awesome accuracy. Although you’d think it would be cool to have troop variety, and it sort of is, the trouble is the grain of things like Defence is too coarse (scale of 10 or so?), with the result that you can easily end up with some weedy troops with high aim, and then a whole bunch of completely useless guys. Whereas vanilla really didn’t have nearly enough of the juicy ground missions, and was over too quickly, vanilla LW just goes too far the other way - not enough new toys per mission count, so instead of missions being juicy things you look forward to, they become a chore. Much as I love the mod to bits, I gave up with my first run through a while ago (though I got up to having Mecs, had started on genetics and psy, and had finished Exalt) because I just felt bogged down with mission after mission after mission after mission after mission. I think I might try that option for my second playthrough. It was just too much combat and not enough new things for me. You will be doing DOZENS of combat missions between any sort of action completes on the overworld map. I made the mistake of not doing this the first time I was playing through the mod and it takes FOREVER. I don’t believe the WIKIis 100% up to date but it’s close enough. They take repair time now and you can easily get your entire fleet in the repair shop for a month on 1 UFO.

Just ignore them because getting your fighters beat up on a large (or medium) UFO early on can basically FUBAR your game.

There is almost no chance you’ll down a large UFO early on (it may not even be possible with the starting fighters) or if it lands you have little chance of winning that battle. You need to ignore them or if it’s a battle - run. One thing that took me a few games to beat into my head (even though they mention it in their FAQ’s) - early on the game will throw things at you that you are not supposed to be able to beat. I’ve been playing on normal and it’s plenty challenging (I’ve beaten the original on Classic Ironman). If you try to learn it blind and you don’t plan on playing quite a few games to learn you will get frustrated. The Air game is MUCH harder so you should read about that and a the other new mechanics before you play.

don’t play “real” ironman) you won’t lose anything if it happens. I’ve had a few CTD’s but they are rare but as long as you have autosave on (i.e. I’ve been playing it a lot lately and it’s great.
